Jantar Mantar
One of the most popular Rajasthan monuments, Jantar Mantar was built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in between 1727 and 1734. This astronomical observatory is known for its remarkable architecture. No tour to Jaipur can be called complete without a visit to Jantar Mantar. This Rajasthan monument is situated close to the magnificent City Palace.
Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is the most popular observatory constructed by Sawai Jai Singh. It is the largest astronomical observatories in the country. The monument has taken its name from mantra (instrument) and mantra (chanting). Initially known as Yantra Mantra, it comprises of 17 instruments. These devices or instruments are constructed on a large scale. In order to find the position of the Dhruva (Pole) star, the complex has the Dhruva Yantra. The Disha Yantra is pointed towards the north direction. Other yantras include Rashivalayas Yantra, Samrat Yantra, Kranti Yantra, Diganta Yantra, Ram Yantra, etc.
It was in 1948, this Rajasthan monument was proclaimed as a national monument. Have a look at the huge sundial named as the Samrat Yantra, which tells the time. It is one of the largest sundials in the world. Today the monument draws several tourists and stands as a testimony to the gone-by days.
