When to go & History
|
|
The proximity to sea renders the state with a pleasing climate throughout the year. This has made Kerala an all season destination; however the months between October to April are considered ideal for traveling. Unlike the northern parts of the country, winter is very mild in the state and makes for a pleasant sightseeing ambience
If you are intending for a “health vacation” by indulging in ayurvedic treatments, then consider going there between April and August. From June- August, the state faces a heavy onslaught of the south-west monsoon and is considered an off season for tourists. However, the trend is slowly changing and even these months are seeing an influx of tourists, thanks to the findings that ayurvedic treatments tend to be more effective if undergone during the monsoon period.

History and Background
Kerala and its neighboring state, Tamil Nadu once shared a common set of language, ethnicity and culture. This is evident from the findings of prehistoric pottery and granite burial artifacts. Kerala became linguistically separate state by the beginning of the 14th century. The Cherans was the first recorded kingdom to have ruled Kerala from their capital at Vanchi. By aligning with the Pallavas, they waged major battles against the neighboring Chola and Pandya kingdoms. A distinct Kerala identity, totally devoid of Tamil culture came into power during the second Chera Empire.
After the arrival of Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese gained control of the lucrative pepper trade. The Portuguese were finally ousted by the Dutch who in turn were ousted by Marthanda Varma of Travancore. Post independence, Travancore and Cochin were merged to form the state of Travancore-Cochin. On November 1, 1956 it was joined with Malabar district of Madras state to form the state of Kerala.
