Kerala is perhaps the best getaway from the drudgery and monotony of the urban grind. The place is famed for its pristine beaches, vibrant culture and tranquil backwaters. Kerala is criss-crossed by numerous lagoons and rivers which make for some unique geographical features. Another unique advantage which Kerala offers is that most of the sightseeing spots are only 2-4 hours away from each other and hence, commuting is not at all strenuous.
Kochi is an idyllic place to start off your tour of Kerala. This vibrant city is a good precinct to spend 2-3 days of your holiday. Fort Kochi is a quaint island with a charming influence of Portuguese traditions. The island has numerous sightseeing spots such as Chinese fishing nets, Jewish synagogues, antique shops and markets.
A mere 2 hours from Kochi is the town of Allepey, the famed backwater destination. You can rent out a house boat for a couple of days and experience sheer tranquility with a cruise through winding canals. The Periyar Tiger Reserve at Thekkady is another must visit precinct, regardless of whether you are a nature enthusiast or not. This place is sure to enthrall you. The reserve is built around a lake which makes for a splendid bird watching spot. The fog that lingers on the water surface and dead trees render this place with an eerie experience during the winters. The wildlife that inhabits this place includes the giant squirrel, elephants, black monkeys and the great Indian hornbill.
A four hour taxi drive from Thekaddy will take you to Munnar, a sleepy hill station amidst tea plantations. It has a wildlife sanctuary park, Eravikulam National Park where you get to see the Nilgri Tahrs. Kovalam is a famed tourist beach resort near Trivandrum. The rocky hills merge into the seashore, rendering an aura of unmatched beauty. The place is also home to numerous internationally acclaimed ayurvedic massage centers and luxury hotels. You can wind off your trip by visiting the Varkala beach, the place is characterized by sharply dropping laterite cliffs and a small beach. Varkala beach is less frequented by people and thus renders more privacy.
