It is a very rare species. Probably only five kalpavrikshas can be found in India out of which four are in Ranchi in the Doranda area.
Its botanical name is Adansonia Digitata. It is of the baobab family and so it is also commonly called the Baobab tree.
Mythologically it`s called the `Kalpavriksha` which literally means the wish fulfilling tree.
Common hindi name is also gorakh Imli.
The plant is of very high medicinal value. Its bark, its fruit, every part of the plant is used for medicinal purpose.
It is very commonly found in Africa where the tribals use it a lot for traditional medicine.
EU approved the extract of the baobab fruit as an ingredient in foods in the European market.
A very interesting fact about this tree is that this is the tree which has been shown in Harry Potter films as the haunted tree.
The main stem of larger baobab trees may reach enormous proportions of up to 28 m in girth. Although baobab trees seldom exceed a height of 25 m.
The stem is covered with a bark layer, which may be 50-100 mm thick. The bark is greyish brown and normally smooth but can often be variously folded and seamed from years of growth. The leaves are hand-sized and divided into 5-7 finger-like leaflets. Being deciduous, the leaves are dropped during the winter months and appear again in late spring or early summer.
The baobab tree is found in areas of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique and other tropical African countries where suitable habitat occurs. In India it is mainly found in Ranchi. |
