Situated in Kashmir opposite Nishat Bagh on the banks of Dal
Lake.
The Hazratbal Mosque was completed in 1979 and it took about eleven years to be built.
The history of the shrine goes back to the early 17th century when the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan`s Subedar, Sadiq Khan, laid out a garden here and constructed a palatial building, Ishrat Mahal or Pleasure House in 1623.
The shrine is known by many names including Hazratbal, Assar-e-Sharief, Madinat-us-Sani, or simply Dargah Sharif.
This revered shrine houses the Moi-e-Muqqadus (preserved sacred hair) of Prophet Mohammad. Public display of the hair takes place only on religious occasions.
