Located just south of the Howrah bridge, in Kolkata.

When Kolkata was the administrative centre for British India, Dalhousie Square, now known as BBD Bagh was the centre of power. It is a square area built around the old Lal Dighi tank which exists till date. It was later called the Tank Square and then the Dalhousie Square.

Dalhousie square was named after Lord Dalhousie, Governor General of India from 1847 to 1856. At different times it has been called ‘The Green before the Fort’ or Tank Square.

Now called the B.B.D. Bagh, which stands for three young Indian freedom fighters - Benoy, Badal and Dinesh, who on 8 December, 1930, shot dead the Inspector General of Prisons, N.S. Simpson, in the balconies of Writers` building of the then Dalhousie square.

The tank in the centre, fed by natural springs, is said to have supplied Charnock with drinking water.


There are many historical buildings, offices, business centers and banks which surround the square, which include the Writers` Building, the Raj Bhavan (residence of the Governor), the State Legislative Assembly House, the Calcutta High Court, St John`s Cathedral (the oldest church in Kolkata), the General Post Office and others.
