It is in old Goa, about 10 kms from Panjim.
Is an example of Baroque architecture in India.
Apart from the elaborate gilded altars, the interior of the church is simple.
Has exhibits paintings with scenes taken from the life of St. Francis Xavier.
Built in 1695, it houses the tomb and mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier.
The mausoleum on the top of which is placed the silver casket with the body of St. Francis Xavier (1696) was the gift of the last of the Medicis, Cosimo III, the Grand Duke of Tuscany.
The public viewing of the incorruptible body of St Francis Xavier is displayed once every ten years which attracts a huge number of devotees, both Christian and non-Christian.
It is India’s first Minor Basilica.
